چکیده

Crystalline silicon solar cells 10–15 times thinner than traditional commercial c-Si cells with 14.9% efficiency are presented with modeling, fabrication, and testing details. These cells are 14 mm thick, 250 mm wide, and have achieved 14.9% solar conversion efficiency under AM 1.5 spectrum. First, modeling results illustrate the importance of high-quality passivation to achieve high efficiency in thin silicon, back contacted solar cells. Then, the methodology used to fabricate these ultra thin devices by means of established microsystems processing technologies is presented. Finally, the optimization procedure to achieve high efficiency as well as the results of the experiments carried out with alumina and nitride layers as passivation coatings are discussed. & 2010 Elsevier B.V. Microsystems-Enabled Photovoltaics: A Path to the Widespread Harnessing of Solar Energy

Abstract If solar energy is ever going to become a mainstream power source, the technologies for harnessing sunlight have to become cheaper than all other forms of energy, be easy and quick to install, and work more safely, reliably and durably than present-day grid power. Our research team is striving to make this happen by utilizing microdesign and microfabrication techniques used in the semi...

15.7% Efficient 10-μm-thick crystalline silicon solar cells using periodic nanostructures.

Only ten micrometer thick crystalline silicon solar cells deliver a short-circuit current of 34.5 mA cm(-2) and power conversion efficiency of 15.7%. The record performance for a crystalline silicon solar cell of such thinness is enabled by an advanced light-trapping design incorporating a 2D inverted pyramid photonic crystal and a rear dielectric/reflector stack.

Efficient Micro-concentrator for Microsystems- Enabled Photovoltaics

MOTIVATION In response to the DOE SunShot initiative to achieve utility scale solar power generation at $1 per watt peak, Sandia National Laboratories is investigating a microsystems-enabled photovoltaics (MEPV) approach that combines the high conversion efficiencies of concentrated photovoltaics (CPV) with the form factor and low system costs of flat panel PV. MEPV combines solar cells having ...

Sunlight-thin nanophotonic monocrystalline silicon solar cells

Introducing nanophotonics into photovoltaics sets the path for scaling down the surface texture of crystalline-silicon solar cells from themicroto the nanoscale, allowing to further boost the photon absorptionwhile reducing siliconmaterial loss. However, keeping excellent electrical performance has proven to be very challenging, as the absorber is damaged by the nanotexturing and the sensitivit...

Analysis of Temperature Effect on a Crystalline Silicon Photovoltaic Module Performance

In this paper, the effect of the cell-temperature on the performance of photovoltaic (PV) module is evaluated. The evaluation is based on a mathematical module (single diode equivalent circuit) and practically based on solar module tester (SMT). Solara®130W PV crystalline silicon module was used in this simulation. The SMT is able to supply a constant irradiance level (1000W/m2) or any other de...
